FIRE RISK ASSESSMENT

It is now compulsory for companies to conduct a Fire Risk Assessment.

On October 1st 2006, The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety order) came into force.  This new approach to fire safety law represents the most significant change for over 30 years.

Employers must now take steps to ensure that they have what is known as a 'suitable and sufficient fire risk assessment' in place.

What Is A Fire Risk Assessment?

A fire risk assessment is an organized and methodical look at your premises, the activities carried on there and the likelihood that a fire could start and cause harm to those in and around the premises.

The aims of the fire risk assessment are:

• To identify the fire hazards.
• To reduce the risk of those hazards causing harm to as low as reasonably practicable.
• To decide what physical fire precautions and management arrangements are necessary to ensure the safety of people in your premises if a fire does start.

Critical issues

• Legislation now requires that companies conduct a Fire Risk Assessment for each site where people work. This is in addition to a Fire Certificate.
• In the event of a fire, senior executives of the business may be held personally responsible for the consequences if they cannot produce evidence to show that a risk assessment has been conducted in line with the legislation.
